A townhouse is a multi-level home that shares one or two walls with its neighbours. It sits between a condo apartment and a detached house in how it lives: you get your own front door and usually several floors of space, while the shared walls keep the footprint and often the price below a comparable detached home in the same area.
The most important distinction when comparing townhouse listings is ownership type. A freehold townhouse means you own the structure and the lot outright and handle all maintenance yourself. A condominium townhouse comes with a monthly fee that typically covers items like exterior upkeep, snow clearing, or shared amenities, and purchases are reviewed through the condo corporation's status certificate. Some communities use a parcel of tied land (POTL) structure, which is freehold ownership plus a smaller common-element fee for shared roads or visitor parking.
Listings on this page are MLS® listings whose descriptions identify the property as a townhouse or townhome, refreshed daily. When you view a listing, check the condo or maintenance fee field to confirm whether it is freehold or condominium, and budget for the status certificate review on condo purchases.
