What to know about buying a salon

A salon or spa for sale is a service business sold as a going concern. What transfers is the equipment and fixtures, the retail stock, the booking system and the client records, the trading name, and the balance of the lease on the premises, which are typically rented in a plaza or a street-level commercial unit rather than owned. The value sits in recurring clients and in the operators who serve them, which makes who stays after closing the central question of the deal rather than a detail of it.

Establish who actually owns the clients. A salon whose stylists rent their chairs is effectively a landlord to a group of independent operators: their books, their own phone numbers and often their chairs and tools leave with them, so ask for the written rental agreements, the notice periods in them, and whether any non-solicitation terms exist before you put a value on the revenue. Where the staff are employees, confirm that the booking software, the client database and the appointments already in it come with the sale, and that you have a lawful basis to keep contacting those clients once you own it.

Then the inspections and the equipment. The local public health authority inspects personal service settings for sterilization and single-use practice, so ask to see the inspection history and the service records for the autoclave, and ask which items on the floor belong to the business rather than to a chair renter or a finance company. Devices raise the stakes: tanning beds and laser or intense pulsed light equipment carry rules about who may operate them and under whose supervision, and those rules differ by province.

Look at what the space itself can carry. Wash units, dryers, pedicure stations and treatment rooms need plumbing, drainage, ventilation and electrical capacity an ordinary retail unit may not have, so confirm what is installed, what the lease permits you to alter, and what the landlord would require if you added a room or a service. Get the remaining lease term and the renewal options at the same time, because the fit-out is yours to pay for and the term is what you have to amortise it over.

Last, ask what has already been sold but not yet delivered. Gift cards, prepaid packages and treatment series are obligations you inherit, not revenue you earn, so ask for a dated schedule of what is outstanding and settle in the price, or through a holdback, who bears it. Ask the same about the retail stock and the professional product lines behind it, since those are usually supplied under an account the distributor has to agree to continue.

The listings on this page are MLS® business listings whose descriptions identify the business as a hair, beauty or nail salon, a barbershop, or a day or medical spa, and whose feed business category is consistent with a personal services operation, refreshed daily. Because the match is made on the description, a salon whose listing is written in general terms will not appear here, and this page does not claim to show every salon or spa for sale. Check each listing for whether the premises are leased. This overview is general information, not legal, financial, or tax advice.

What transfers when a business is sold

A business listed for sale is a going concern rather than a property. What changes hands is usually the equipment, the stock on hand, the trading name and customer goodwill, the staff who stay on, and the balance of the lease on the premises. The premises themselves are more often rented from a landlord than owned by the seller, so most of these sales are an asset purchase plus an assignment of that lease.

Where the seller does own the land and the building, the real estate is priced separately from the business and can be bought outright or leased back. Each listing states which of the two it is, so read that before you compare one asking price against another.

Three things decide whether a business can keep trading the day after it changes hands: the licence or registration the operator holds rather than the premises, the landlord's written consent to assign the lease, and a registry search showing which equipment is owned outright and which is still financed. Settle all three before you remove conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How many salons and spas are for sale in British Columbia?
As of November 2026, haho.ca lists 57 salons and spas for sale in British Columbia, each sold as a going concern: the equipment, the stock, the trading name and, in most cases, the balance of a lease on premises the seller rents rather than owns. This page updates as listings come on and off the market.
Do the stylists and their clients stay after the sale?
That depends on how they are engaged. Employees carry their service over to a buyer under provincial employment standards, but chair and booth renters are independent operators whose clients follow them, so a renter who leaves takes that book along. Ask for each rental or employment agreement, its notice period and any non-solicitation clause, and treat revenue attached to a departing operator differently from revenue attached to the location.
Is the retail product line included, and can I keep buying it?
Ask on both counts. Professional-only brands are supplied under an account or a distribution agreement, sometimes held by the business and sometimes by an individual stylist, and continuing it usually needs the distributor's agreement rather than only the seller's. Count and value the stock on the closing date with a method agreed in writing, and exclude anything expired or unsellable.
What happens to gift cards and prepaid packages already sold?
They usually become your obligation to honour, which means work you perform without new revenue. Ask for a dated schedule of outstanding gift cards, unused packages and prepaid treatment series before closing, and agree in the purchase price or through a holdback who bears that liability.
Does buying a salon mean buying the building?
Usually not. Most of these listings sell the business and assign the lease on the premises, which the seller rents from a landlord. Where the seller does own the land and building, the listing says so and the real estate is priced separately from the business. Check each listing for which of the two it is before comparing asking prices.
Can I see every salon for sale in British Columbia?
Yes. All 57 listings are linked across 3 pages, 24 per page, starting at page 1 of this index.
